Texas Lutheran University (TLU) put up a strong fight against Schreiner University on Saturday night, but despite a career-best performance from Teddy Tapken, the Bulldogs fell short, losing 88-78 at Memorial Gymnasium. The game marked a special occasion as TLU honored its senior players before tip-off.
Tapken’s Career Night Highlights Bulldogs’ Effort
Sophomore Teddy Tapken delivered an outstanding individual performance, scoring a career-high 27 points on an efficient 11-of-15 shooting while also grabbing seven rebounds. Tapken’s offensive output was one of the bright spots for TLU, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win.
He was supported by teammates Xavier Phillips and Mason Wallace, who each contributed 14 points. Phillips also added four rebounds and four assists in a well-rounded effort. Senior Easton Allen made his presence felt with a team-high 11 rebounds while chipping in seven points.
TLU Honors Senior Players
Before the game, Texas Lutheran celebrated its three seniors, recognizing their contributions to the program:
- Easton Allen
- Xavier Phillips
- Nell Horton
It was a special moment for these players as they played their final home game in front of the TLU crowd.
Game Recap: Bulldogs Battle Hard but Fall Short
The game started as a back-and-forth battle, with both teams exchanging small leads. Schreiner managed to build a five-point lead midway through the first half.
Late in the first half, the Bulldogs went on a 12-2 scoring run, led by Isaac Orozco, who played a key role by either scoring or assisting on eight of those points. However, Schreiner responded with a buzzer-beating shot from Beau Cervantes, extending their lead to seven points at halftime.
In the second half, Schreiner controlled the game, maintaining their lead throughout. The Mountaineers stretched their advantage to as many as 14 points, and despite TLU’s efforts, they couldn’t close the gap.
Despite a stellar performance from Teddy Tapken, Texas Lutheran couldn’t overcome Schreiner’s consistent second-half lead. The Bulldogs showed resilience, particularly with their first-half comeback, but ultimately fell short. With just a few games left in the regular season, TLU will look to bounce back as they hit the road for a rivalry clash against Trinity.
