A Texas high school teacher, Molly Colleen Spears, has turned herself in to authorities nearly a year after being indicted for allegedly having an inappropriate relationship with a male student. Spears, 35, an arts and language teacher at Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu, was arrested on Tuesday.
Allegations and Charges Against Molly Spears
Spears faces a second-degree felony charge for an improper relationship between an educator and a student, stemming from an alleged incident on June 12, 2023. Court records reveal that Spears is also accused of texting the student to arrange a meeting. The student’s age has not been disclosed.
Spears’ Employment and Resignation
Molly Spears began working at Barbers Hill Independent School District (ISD) in August 2021. However, she resigned from her position in June 2023, the same month the alleged incident occurred. A district spokesperson confirmed her resignation at the time, stating, “Molly Spears worked as a high school teacher for Barbers Hill ISD from August 2021 to June 2023. She resigned earlier this month.”
Teaching Certification Status and Legal Proceedings
According to Texas Education Agency records, Spears’ teaching certificate has been inactive since September 2024 due to an ongoing investigation into alleged misconduct.
A Chambers County grand jury indicted Spears on February 8, 2024, and a warrant for her arrest was issued shortly after. However, it remains unclear why she was not taken into custody immediately after the indictment.
Defense Attorney’s Statement
Spears’ defense attorney, Christopher L. Tritico, stated, “Ms. Spears was first notified of the charges two days ago, and we acted immediately to set up and secure bond. I cannot explain why the case remained inactive for so long. That is a question for the other side. Ms. Spears is eager to confront the allegations and put this matter behind her.”
Arrest, Bail, and Possible Consequences
Spears surrendered to the Chambers County Jail on Tuesday and was released on a $50,000 bond. If convicted, she could face up to 20 years in prison. The Barbers Hill ISD Police Department has not responded to requests for comments.
This case has sparked widespread attention due to the severity of the allegations and the delay in legal action. As the investigation continues, all eyes will be on the court proceedings to see how this case unfolds.
