A band competition at Pasadena Memorial High School took a tragic turn on Saturday night when a shooting occurred, injuring percussion technician Dwight Benjamin. After being rushed to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the shoulder, Benjamin is now recovering and expressing gratitude for his survival. The shooter, 83-year-old Dennis Brandl, has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and is currently in custody.
Shooting at the Band Competition
The incident took place during a Texas Color Guard Circuit (TCGC) percussion competition, where Benjamin and his team from Angleton ISD had just won first place. The celebration was suddenly interrupted by gunfire inside the school.
“We were all just kind of standing, talking, laughing, just talking about what we’re going to do next week. That’s when it was just a big explosion. That’s when it happened,” Benjamin recalled.
Injury and Immediate Response
Benjamin was shot in the shoulder, and a group of bystanders, including an off-duty officer and Pearland dads, tackled Brandl to prevent further violence. Two students, Charlie (17) and Makaylla, played a crucial role in helping Benjamin.
- Charlie carried Benjamin across the street despite his own anxiety and exhaustion.
- Makaylla, a first-aid volunteer, applied pressure to Benjamin’s wound to prevent excessive bleeding and keep him conscious.
Benjamin was then airlifted to the hospital for treatment.
Shooter Identified as 83-Year-Old Dennis Brandl
Authorities identified the shooter as Dennis Brandl, a Spring resident with no known connection to the band competition. Pasadena police reported that Brandl claimed he was being chased and feared for his and his wife’s safety.
- He fired a weapon inside the school, striking Benjamin.
- He was subdued by bystanders and later arrested.
- A mental health evaluation has been ordered for Brandl.
Legal Proceedings and Investigation
Brandl has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. On Monday, he was given an $80,000 bond and remains in the Harris County Jail while authorities continue their investigation.
Benjamin, still recovering, stated:
“I just hope justice is served. I hope that he’s held accountable.”
Benjamin’s Message of Gratitude
Despite the traumatic experience, Benjamin has chosen to focus on gratitude. In a video from the hospital, he shared:
“This shouldn’t be a time of hate or darkness or bitterness. It should be a time to be grateful. Everybody is here, I’m still here, everybody is safe. That’s what matters at the end of the day.”
While Benjamin recovers, the investigation into Brandl’s actions and motives continues. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of community support and quick action in emergencies. As the legal process unfolds, many, including Benjamin, are hoping for justice and accountability.
