The Wimberley High School Lady Texans soccer team dedicated their 4A District 26 season to McKenzie Duggar, a student trainer and sophomore who recently passed away. In their first district match on Feb. 7, the Lady Texans honored her memory with a 5-0 win against the Marble Falls Mustangs at Texan Stadium, marking their seventh consecutive victory.
A Special Tribute to McKenzie Duggar
Before the game, a minute of silence was held in memory of McKenzie Duggar, who tragically passed away on Jan. 28. The Lady Texans dedicated their season to her, adding an emotional layer to their already impressive performance this year.
Lady Texans’ Strong Performance Against Marble Falls
The Lady Texans, with an overall record of 12-1 and 1-0 in district play, showcased their dominance once again. In 13 games this season, they have scored 60 goals and conceded only two, proving their strength both in attack and defense.
Marble Falls, with a record of 7-5-1, put up a strong fight, with their goalkeeper making several saves. However, freshman Abby Durkin opened the scoring for Wimberley at the 25:47 mark, giving them a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Second Half Surge Seals the Win
The Lady Texans came out with renewed energy in the second half. Sophomore Dylan Watson scored early, making it 2-0. Just a minute later, junior Lillian Sandoval, the team’s top scorer with 21 goals, converted a penalty kick, extending the lead to 3-0.
Marble Falls had a close chance to score at the 10:19 mark, but Wimberley’s defense, including a crucial save by goalkeeper Chloe Row, kept them at bay. Watson continued her stellar performance, scoring two more goals in the final minutes for a hat-trick, securing the 5-0 victory.
Dylan Watson’s Hat-Trick Highlights Team Effort
Watson, reflecting on her performance, said, “I had a couple of hat-tricks in preseason last year, but this is my first this year. We played well, but we’re still working on being consistent. When we really connect, we’re unstoppable, and that’s where we want to be for the whole game.”
What’s Next for the Lady Texans?
Wimberley will continue their district campaign with a challenging away game against Davenport (9-0-1 overall; 1-0 district) on Feb. 11, followed by a home match against Canyon Lake (7-4-1 overall; 0-0-1 district) on Feb. 14 at 7 p.m.
The Lady Texans’ impressive form, combined with their dedication to McKenzie Duggar, adds a powerful emotional drive to their season. As they aim for district success, their strong defense, effective attack, and team spirit make them a team to watch.
