Pasadena, Texas – An 83-year-old retired Navy veteran, Dennis Brandl, remains in jail after allegedly shooting a spectator at a high school band competition at Pasadena Memorial High School on Saturday night. His defense attorney, Paul Doyle, claims Brandl believed he and his wife were being chased and feared for their lives at the time of the incident.
Incident Overview: What Happened?
Brandl reportedly fired through an auditorium door, striking Dwight Benjamin, who was attending the event. Witnesses stated that Brandl appeared to be searching for additional targets, but four fathers of students tackled and restrained him before he could cause further harm.
Defense Claims Mental Confusion Led to Shooting
According to Doyle, the shooting occurred after Brandl and his wife pulled off the freeway while driving to the coast. His wife, a former schoolteacher, needed to use the bathroom, and Brandl became disoriented, believing she was in danger.
“Nobody could predict that this would’ve happened,” Doyle said, describing the incident as a “tragic” and unexpected event.
Legal Proceedings and Mental Health Concerns
Following a court hearing on Monday, Brandl’s bond was increased to $300,000. The judge has also ordered a mental evaluation, as his attorney stated that Brandl appears confused and “doesn’t even know where he is.”
When asked if Brandl has been diagnosed with any mental illnesses, Doyle declined to give specifics but suggested that such an incident from an elderly man with no criminal history speaks for itself.
Victim’s Condition and Next Steps
The victim, Dwight Benjamin, is expected to recover from his injuries. Doyle emphasized that if Brandl is released on bond, he will not have access to firearms.
This shocking incident has raised concerns about mental health, elderly gun ownership, and public safety. With a court-ordered mental evaluation underway, authorities will determine Brandl’s competency to stand trial. Meanwhile, the community remains relieved that no other spectators or students were harmed during the terrifying ordeal.
