A Community Coming Together

According to Stephanie Abbott, owner of Grit and Grace CrossFit, the idea for the fundraiser originated from members of the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Department and their families who train at the facility.

“It was just going to be a small event with a meal train, but it kept growing and growing until we decided to turn it into a fundraiser,” Abbott shared. “We have a W.O.D. (Workout of the Day) dedicated to first responders, and we’re doing this one for Deputy Vargas.”

The event has received overwhelming support from both local and out-of-state CrossFit communities:

  • CrossFit organizations from across Texas and other states will be holding simultaneous memorial workouts in honor of Deputy Vargas.
  • Local businesses are also participating, with proceeds from T-shirt sales at the event benefiting the Vargas family.

Honoring Deputy Jesus Vargas

Deputy Jesus Vargas, an Alvin High School graduate and a 17-year veteran of the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), tragically passed away on January 15, 2025, while attempting to arrest suspect Robert Lee Davis. During the confrontation, Davis fatally shot Deputy Vargas and later wounded a K-9 officer before being killed in return fire by law enforcement.

Deputy Vargas is remembered as a dedicated public servant, a loving family man, and a respected member of both the law enforcement community and the Alvin area.
