MICHAEL C. BYRD
Michael C. Byrd was born in San Antonio, Texas and lived there the first 8 years of his life. Son of an Air Force Navigator he then lived over most of the United States. Mike has a BS in AeroSpace Engineering from The University of Texas, a MS in Engineering (Rocket Propulsion) from Purdue University and a MS-Systems Engineering from SMU. Mike worked as a Propulsion Engineer for General Dynamics, Fort Worth for 2+ years and then served his country 20 years in the Air Force as a pilot flying the T-37, T-38, F-4, and the F-5 and also as a rocket scientist, project manager and Deputy Joint Director for a Joint Test with the Army. After retirement from the AF, Mike has worked in a variety of jobs in Information Technology including free-lance technical writer for PC Magazine, Senior Software Manager for a government sponsored munitions effectiveness committee, and IT Director for Texas Windstorm Insurance Association (9 years). Most recently he has concentrated on database work. Mike continues to work (part-time) as an independent consultant and trainer for Microsoft SQL Server (database) and has presented many database briefings in the United States and outside the US (Norway, Sweden, and Australia). Mike has been part of Sunrise Beach since 1995 and a resident since 1998. Mike is seeking his second term as a city councilman and strongly believes in fiscal responsibility and accountability
“My goal in running for city council is to provide common sense direction to the city through small, efficient, responsive, and cost effective local government. My wife and I are full time residents of SRB having owned our lakefront home for 11 years. I have an undergraduate degree in business, a graduate degree in business administration (MBA), and am a licensed financial advisor with my own Edward Jones office in Horseshoe Bay. I have served in numerous leadership positions over the years including industry boards, homeowner associations, and church.”
I retired a year ago after 32 years working in the Healthcare field. I was the Chief Operating Officer for a 300+ Retirement Community as well as the Administrator of the Skilled Nursing facility. My responsibilities included the over-all operation of the facilities which included oversight of the care for all residents, survey and regulation readiness and compliance, management of personnel and emergency preparedness among other duties. I have worked with Boards of Directors and Committees.
I have spent my life in service to others and see the City Council membership as an extension of that service. I believe in team work and if elected I look forward to serving all citizens of Sunrise Beach.
I have had the distinct pleasure of serving as your Council Member for the past eight years. It has been a life-long ambition of mine to build community by improving community relations where ever Linda, my wife of 49 years, and I have lived. I believe that this includes reducing conflict, increasing trust and improving the quality of life for all of us who live and work together, most importantly now in Sunrise Beach. I retired from the US Air Force in 1992 as a Full Colonel (06) after serving 26 years as a pilot, Air Attaché to Greece and Belgium and as Chairman of the NATO Air Traffic Services Working Group, then served as Director of Operations and Administrator for University United Methodist Church in Austin, and finally as the first Executive Director for the Austin based Community Action Network dedicated to community consensus building and cooperative problem solving. In Feb 2007 Linda and I moved full-time to Sunrise Beach on property that the family has owned and used for 50 years. I have served in leadership roles for a variety of community organizations and currently am a member of the SRB Volunteer Fire Department, the “Beachers” lawn chair brigade, sing with the Highland Lanes Men’s Chorus, serve as treasurer of the Highland Lakes Birding and Wildflower Society, and teach at the Austin Presbyterian Seminary. Linda and I truly love ‘The Beach’ and believe, after living in 14 different communities, that this is a very special and unique place where all of us have the opportunity to enjoy life and serve each other.
