By 1970 the estimated population had risen to 800. It was incorporated in 1973 as a Class C City named Sunrise Beach Village, and converted to a Class A City in 2008. After peaking at 1,025 in the mid-1970s, the population fell to 420 by 1980. The population was 704 in 2000 and is estimated today at 840.
